APPG for Financial Education for Young People

Mark is a cofounder of the APPG for Financial Education for Young People and has continued to promote optimal levels of financial education amongst young people. This is because he firmly believes in its ability as a means to ensure that ‘’our young adults coming out of our local schools are as financially literate as possible’’.

In the UK we have the highest personal debt ratio in the G20. This adds up to £28,000 of personal debt per person in the UK.

Mark is keen to reverse the culture of high borrowing and low saving and wants the youth to learn how to save for the future. To emphasise the need for skills and knowledge, Mark has sent a survey to several head teachers in Wyre Forest to pinpoint how the system can be improved. It includes establishing what education exists at the moment and detailed consultations on how this can be reviewed for the long term.

The APPG has recently published a report called ‘Financial Education in the Curriculum’. The report follows an eight month, UK wide inquiry and recommends that the Government should promote the provision of high quality financial education in schools in England. Mark supports these recommendations.
