Interesting reading in the Times today. 120 business leaders have written to the Times to give their support to an in-coming Labour government. But read on through to the Times editorial leader column. This highlights that Kier Starmer’s “new deal” with the unions increases worker protections. Fine words, but if you are an employer, workers will have protection from unfair dismissal from day one, making it impossible to resolve unsuitable new employees. Family friendly working hours and a right to “switch off” make it harder to tackle unforeseen crises at work. And the “genuine living wage” will place a burden on employers and set about inflation.
The Times raises some good points, and it is worth a read. It finishes by suggesting that if Labour genuinely wants to be a party of business, it must come together with businesses to create an alliance of long term innovation, inventiveness and investment. Not a new era of burdensome red tape.
