As thousands of demonstrators descended on Parliament yesterday, Mark Garnier, Wyre Forest's Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman, voiced further calls for a Referendum on the EU Treaty. Mark Garnier has been calling for a referendum on this major treaty for nearly a year and has collected hundreds of signatures from Wyre Forest's residents, angry at Gordon Brown's U-turn.
Speaking at the demonstration, Mark said:
"This is not about being in or out of Europe - that debate can be had another time. This is about the Government being elected on a manifesto that promised a referendum on the EU Treaty, and has now told their electorate that their referendum will not happen.
"The country elected Tony Blair and they got Gordon Brown; now Gordon Brown says he will break his manifesto pledge. Is it any surprise at all that confidence in politicians - especially Labour ones - is at an all time low."
Significantly, Mark Garnier is the only politician in Wyre Forest campaigning for this promised referendum. All other political parties in Wyre Forest seem eerily silent on this matter.
