Mark Garnier MP has welcomed the unemployment figures for August 2013, released today by the Office for National Statistics.
The latest figures show that unemployment in Wyre Forest is 4.3% in August, with youth unemployment at 7.2%, lowest since May 2010. The number of JSA claimants fell by 47 from the previous month, and by 174 since August 2012.
Mark Garnier commented: "This is very heartening news for our constituency and shows that our efforts to get more people into jobs are paying dividends. Unemployment in Wyre Forest is over 10% down from the rate I inherited in May 2010, and importantly, the number of 18 to 24 year olds out of employment is nearly 21% down from the time of the last General Election.
"Despite the fact that both unemployment and youth unemployment were at their lowest levels since May 2010, our effort needs to continue. This is very good news for those who have recently found jobs and good news for our local economy. However, for those still seeking employment, I will continue pushing for more economic activity, more Jobs Fairs, and more employment opportunities in our constituency.
"Today's jobs figures sadly come on a day when we learn of the appointment of administrators at Lawrence Recycling. This is a company I know well and has been started by the family from extraordinary humble beginnings. The Lawrences , and many hardworking families like them, represent the gritty entrepreneurial backbone of this country and falling into administration after two consecutive occurrences of bad luck is tragic. They have created many jobs locally and my sympathy is with them, all their staff and all those who will be affected by this sad news."
