Mark Garnier has welcomed the fall in the number of unemployed older people in Wyre Forest. Since the General Election in 2010, the number of people over the age of 50 claiming the main unemployment benefit is down 58.1%. This is particularly noticeable in comparison to the 132.5% rise in unemployment in that age group between April 2005 and April 2010.
Many businesses benefit from hiring workers over 50 because of their experience and strong work ethic. Research has estimated that finding work for all those aged between 50 and 64 who want it could boost the British economy by as much as £50 billion.
Mark Garnier MP says, "This is good news and must have brought renewal to many families. A lot of people can be discouraged by looking for work later in life and I'm pleased to say that does not seem to be the case in Wyre Forest! Getting back into work brings added financial rewards and also a new lease of life, especially when we feel the pressures of ageing."
