At the annual meeting of the Wyre Forest District Council Conservative Group today, Group leader Stephen Clee stood down and Cllr John Campion was elected to fill the post of group leader. The change comes after Wyre Forest Conservatives yet again proved they are the most popular political party across Wyre Forest, taking 36% of votes cast on Thursday's district elections. Taking account of previous results in Chaddesley and Blakedown, where no other party contested the seat leaving the seat unopposed for Conservatives, Conservatives are the party of choice for 38% of Wyre Forest residents.
Commenting on the results and John Campion's new appointment, Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman Mark Garnier said:
"I am truly delighted at John's appointment. He has already demonstrated his ability by running the council's finances wisely and sensibly for the last three years, reversing the appalling mismanagement of the council's previous Health Concern administration's legacy of high council tax rises - an administration that tried to close Bewdley Museum, introduced the hugely unpopular fortnightly bin collections and tried in vain to block an investment of £160 million in our district's schools.
"John is a highly skilled and talented man and I know that the Conservative Group will be in a steady pair of hands under his leadership.
"I would also take this opportunity to thank Steve Clee for all his work over the years. He has had a clear vision for the District Council and this has been rewarded by the continued support of the residents of Wyre Forest at the ballot box."
