Wyre Forest MP Mark Garnier met today with representatives of the National Farmers' Union in Worcestershire. High on the topics for discussions is the ongoing horse meat scandal.
Mark Garnier said: 'This horse meat scandal highlights how important it is that we know what we are eating. Whilst there is probably no threat to public health, supermarkets selling horse meat as a beef product underlines just how vulnerable our food supply chain is.
'Yet the NFU's Red Tractor Campaign, guaranteeing that a product is born, reared, slaughtered and processed in the UK, is a sure sign of excellence. That is why I am supporting the Red Tractor Campaign: not only does it ensure best quality products - it supports our local food producers. I am therefore urging everyone to support British farmers and food producers, especially local producers, and to choose Red Tractor-labelled products.'
The Red Tractor scheme covers production standards, hygiene, animal welfare, and the environment. The Red Tractor food chain suppliers are independently inspected to ensure that the food is safe and to confirm the origin of the raw ingredients.
