Mark Garnier MP is delighted with the continued downward trend in unemployment locally
Figures released today by the Office for National Statistics show that unemployment has fallen once again in Wyre Forest. The number of unemployed claimants in Wyre Forest in February 2014 was 1682 which represents 3.5% of the economically active population. This compares to 4% nationally and 4.9% regionally.
The number of claimants is 646 lower than in February 2013 and 123 lower than in January 2014. This represents a 27.75% drop in the unemployment rate year on year from February 2013- February 2014.
The unemployment rate was 4.8% when Mark was elected in 2010 and has dropped by 1.3% or over a quarter since then.
Mark Garnier said “I am delighted with the figures that have been released today. The rate is nearly 28% lower than this time last year which is extremely positive news for Wyre Forest. The continuing pattern of falling unemployment in the area highlights improvements in our local economy and shows that investment and regeneration in Wyre Forest are paying off.
“The Wyre Forest unemployment rate is consistently lower than the national rate and the West Midlands region. This month the Job Seekers Allowance claimant rate has remained static both regionally and nationally whilst dropping locally, highlighting the importance of the hard work that is carried out locally in Wyre Forest.
“I am pleased with these figures but there is still work to be done to ensure that the downward trend continues. I held a Jobs Fair on 14th March where a variety of jobs, apprenticeships and graduate opportunities were on offer. I will continue to hold such events locally in the future as they provide a fantastic opportunity for jobseekers to meet directly with employers and get valuable advice.”
