Mark Garnier MP has welcomed the latest unemployment figures which show another drop locally
Figures released today by the Office for National Statistics show a continued fall in unemployment in Wyre Forest.
The number of unemployed claimants in Wyre Forest in July was 1,216 which represents 2.6% of the economically active population.
The number of claimants is 903 lower than in July 2013 and 79 lower than in June 2014. This means that the number of claimants is 42.6% lower than in July last year. The claimant rate was 4.8% when Mark was elected in 2010. Since then Wyre Forest has witnessed a significant fall in unemployment and the claimant count has dropped considerably by nearly a half.
Mark Garnier said “We have seen yet another drop in unemployment in Wyre Forest. It is welcome that the claimant rate is significantly lower than July last year. This is certainly improving news for our area. Once again the claimant count in Wyre Forest is lower than both the regional and national average. This shows that all of the hard work that we do locally to combat unemployment is working.
Nationally the picture is also good and the number of people in work rose by 167,000 in the quarter. Average wages also rose as did the number of people who are self-employed. All of this shows that our economic plan is working and our economy is recovering.
However it is important to not be complacent and I will continue to hold events such as jobs fairs in Wyre Forest to make sure that the downward trend continues.”
